Description:

The office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (REDI) is delighted to have this opportunity to introduce you to the Upstander Engagement model which has been adopted by the Faculty of Medicine to support our goal to create respectful, inclusive, and safe learning and work environments.

Upstander Engagement is a social justice tool that members of our community, especially those with privilege and power, can use to intervene and support members of our community who are harmed by exclusionary, racist and discriminatory conduct and whose vulnerability and lack of power make it challenging and exhausting to act on their own behalf. Intervention can produce positive results in situations in which a wide range of unacceptable, racist and discriminatory behaviours occur. These situations harm individuals and undermine our community. In this session we refer to these wide ranging behaviours as non-inclusive conduct.

The session will focus on:

  • Understanding what constitutes an inclusive learning and work environment
  • Describing the barriers to inclusion in our working and learning environments
  • Identifying actions to promote inclusivity
  • Describing Upstander Engagement as a tool to support equity and inclusion
  • Transitioning knowledge from theory to practice

There will be one pre-workshop module to cover the theory component. The workshop will be very practical and interactive!
